New Super Mario Bros. Wii, like all the previous releases in the Super Mario Bros. franchise is a side-scrolling platforming game where players collect coins as they attempt to make their way through progressively more difficult game levels using their ability to time jumps over obstacles and avoid a slew of enemies. But although the game contain several well-deserved nods to previous games in the series in the form of iconic characters like Mario, Luigi and two Toads, as well as familiar enemies, sound effects and levels, it is not simply another trip down Mario Bros. memory lane. Taking advantage of the flexibility and power of the Wii and Wii Remote, New Super Mario Bros. Wii manages to preserve the retro experience that fans love about the series, while adding new game features. Notable additions among these include, expansive play levels and new powerups and characters, but by far the most important, and in fact game-defining new feature is simultaneous multiplayer.

A Franchise First: Simultaneous Multiplayer
Since the very first
Super Mario Bros. game took the world by storm in the late 1980s gamers anxious to get into the action have patiently and impatiently waited their turn as the infamous 'player 2.' Those days are no more. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii players can now navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time, on the same level, at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun. With the multiplayer mode, the newest installment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced Super Mario Bros. fun.

Controller Choices Via the Wii Remote
In another nod to the series' Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) roots, the Wii Remote controller used with
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is held sideways, allowing for easy, classic inputs using the D-pad to direct playable characters, the 1 button to jump and 2 button to spit out projectiles like snowballs and fireballs. In addition, players can access powerups with their choice of either the push of a button, or by shaking the Wii remote, again demonstrating the perfect merging of classic gameplay and modern game design which is New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

I actually played this game years ago on my Wii but I ended up losing my copy I recently managed to buy a new one and decide to start over from the very beginning but I do distinctly remember the play the first time I played it and this is really a top-quality game it looks great feels great the controls are easy. It's a very dangerous and tricky thing to try to make a sequel of a classic particularly what a lot of people would consider one of the greatest video games ever and that's the original Super Mario Brothers I like millions of people around the world when I was a kid play the original on my old NES. Just like remaking or doing a sequel to A beloved film there have been a lot of video games that have tried this and not been particularly successful. It's risky when you are again dealing with a game that is so legendary but this game actually delivers and I would argue actually manages to be better than the original in quite a few places. There's really no sense going into detail with the story and that's the only problem with the game because it's the same old thing Bowser has Princess Peach kidnapped again, seriously that girl needs some better security around her Castle, what is this now the 5 billionth time Bowser has been able to kidnap Peach and of course Mario and his friends have to run off to save her so that's the only problem with the game it's the same old story line but everything else is much better first you get some extra ways to use Mario my personal favorite is Mario literally gets a propeller on top of his head and can fly great distances this can be very helpful and quite a few levels also you'll come across Toad Houses for example in one of them you play a game of chance a wall of panels you climb up down one and it turns around and either shows an item or the Bowser or Bowser jr. Logo every time you make a match with an item it goes into your item stash but if you match Bowser or his kid the game is over though you do not lose what you have already matched it just stops you from continuing to match anything more there are other bonuses strewn about particularly Giant coins 3 in each level that will come in very handy once you finally managed to rescue the princess bonus levels and of course each level just like in the original game has all of its little secrets so there's a great deal of replay value hear you not only want to get a higher score but you're going to have to go back and look at quite a few of these levels to find a lot of these hidden places where you can find stash of coins, items and all kinds of other goodies. There also bonus levels once you finish the main campaign to unlock even more goodies. Oh by the way one little tip. Once you've gone into a toad house and grab whatever you can get the house disappears however if at any point in the game you run out of lives and it's a game over all of the Toad Houses from the previous levels will pop back up so you can go back to those houses to load yourself up with more items this is simply pure enjoyment it's everything a video game is supposed to be you can just sit back and have a good time playing it if you have never had the chance of playing this don't miss out on a really nice video gaming experience

The very first video game I ever saw or played was the original Super Mario Brothers on Nintendo. Ever since then, I've enjoyed all the different iterations of Mario games that Nintendo has released over the past twenty years or so. When Nintendo 64 came out, Mario became a 3D game, which was a huge change for the series, so it's good to see that New Super Mario Brothers Wii (which I'm abbreviating as NSMBW from now on) has gone back to the old-school style of 2D Mario games.

Simply put, this game is more like Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World than Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy. This isn't just a reflection of the fact that this game is 2D instead of 3D; it also extends to the way levels are structured and the types of power ups you get. You run, jump, swim, and sometimes fly (sort of) your way through lots of different levels to face off against Bowser. Each level includes three special coins which allow you to unlock various hint movies and as well as special levels which only become available after beating the game once. Besides the usual flower, star, and mushroom powerups, there is also a propeller hat, which lets you jump very high and slowly float to the ground, an ice flower which freezes enemies, and a penguin suit, which lets you slide (and also shoots ice fireballs).

This game is notably harder than Super Mario Galaxy, although it probably is not as hard as the original Super Mario Brothers or possibly even Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World. It is possible that complete novice gamers will find this game difficult, although the game does start out relatively easy and only gradually increases the difficulty. If you're new to games (like many owners of the Wii) and unsure of how difficult this game will be for you, give it a try at a friend's first. In any case, if you die a lot (eight times) on a level, the game will give you the option to have a computer "guide" play through the level for you, so you can see how it's done while advancing to the next stage.

The multiplayer is the most novel addition to NSMBW. Up to four players can play the game simultaneously, which is as chaotic as it sounds. Because players can pick each other up and push each other around, it is entirely possible for players to accidentally or intentionally kill each other. This can be frustrating for less skilled players, but there is always an option to "bubble", which lets you float around in an invincible bubble and follow non-bubbled players. Of course, at least one person needs to be non-bubbled at any time. This lets less skilled players take temporary breaks if they ever reach parts of the game which seem overly difficult. This also makes the game noticeably easier for players who cooperate with each other, since if you die you will shortly return to the world in a bubble, instead of sitting out until the other player dies. The only way a group of players can game over is if they all die or are bubbled at the same time. Outside of the main game, you can also play "coin battle" with other players, where you race up to three other players on a level to see who can grab the most coins.

The biggest "problem" I had with this game is that it seemed too short to me. I completed it in about ten hours or so, so this game is much shorter than Super Mario Galaxy. I didn't unlock all the special levels, so that's some additional content, but at times I felt nostalgic for the large levels in Super Mario 3 which weren't present in this game. (For example, some worlds in SMB3 had fifteen or twenty stages, while in this game most worlds only have around ten.) Additional content would have made a very enjoyable game even better, but if you enjoy platformers this game is worth getting as is. I know I had lots of fun every moment I was playing this game.
